THURLES- JULY 8TH 1962 WATERFORD V CORK In photo: Ned Power (Waterford goalkeeper), Christy Ring (Cork), Tom Cunningham (Waterford), Austin Flynn (Waterford, partially hidden), Liam Dowling (Cork, partially hidden).
Waterford goalkeeper Ned Power makes the most spectacular and courageous hurling save ever recorded by a still camera in the Munster Hurling semi-final against Cork in Thurles in 1962.
Tom Cunningham has his right arm and hurley wrapped around Christy Ring but the activity of the two gladdiators behind them is best left to the imagination. Tipperary’s great defender John Doyle
once described his goal area as ‘Hell’s Kitchen. This photograph, captured by Louis MacMonagle (RIP 1975) while working with The Cork Examiner, shows magnificently what he meant.
